Nature unleashed its fury in the hilly terrains of Jammu and Kashmir once again as a massive cloudburst struck the Chhatroo area of Kishtwar district around 2:30 AM on Saturday. The sudden downpour triggered severe flash floods and led to a heavy flow of mud and debris from mountain streams, submerging large parts of the locality within minutes. The natural disaster caused extensive structural damage across the region. However, in a major relief, no human casualties or loss of lives have been reported so far.
Shops and Houses Submerged, Vehicles Washed Away
As residents of Chhatroo woke up on Saturday morning, they were greeted by scenes of destruction with mud, boulders, and water covering the streets. The fierce floodwaters washed away two vehicles parked along the banks of a local stream. The main market of Chhatroo was completely silted with mud and rocks. Flash floods breached several commercial shops, showrooms, and residential houses, causing property damage worth lakhs of rupees. The water rushed in with such force that locals had virtually no time to secure their belongings.
National Highway Blocked, Traffic Comes to a Standstill
The disaster severely disrupted the transportation network in the region. Traffic on the Kishtwar-Chhatroo-Sinthan National Highway was completely halted after heavy debris blocked the road at multiple points. This highway serves as a vital arterial route connecting the region to the Kashmir Valley, leaving commuters and travellers stranded. Teams from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and local administration have been deployed with heavy machinery to clear the muck and restore connectivity at the earliest.
Precautionary School Closures Across Chenab Valley
In view of the relentless rainfall and the heightened risk of landslides, the district administration took swift preventive measures. Authorities ordered the closure of all government and private educational institutions across the three districts of Chenab Valley—Kishtwar, Doda, and Ramban. District Education Officers directed schools to switch to online classes to ensure student safety. Residents have been strongly advised against unnecessary travel due to the ongoing threat of shooting stones and slippery road conditions.
Relief Operations Underway, Administration Promises Compensation
Upon receiving information about the cloudburst, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Chhatroo, along with police contingents and senior civil administration officials, rushed to the spot. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were immediately deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations in the affected zones. Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh took stock of the situation and spoke with the Deputy Commissioner of Kishtwar. He assured that damage to commercial properties and small businesses would be assessed promptly to provide compensation as per government norms.
Weather Department Issues Alert, Public Urged to Stay Cautious
The Meteorological Department (MeT) has issued a weather advisory for the entire Jammu division, warning of continued heavy rainfall, potential landslides, and flash floods. Similar reports of heavy rainfall causing waterlogging and inundation in residential homes emerged from the Pahloo/Pahlipora areas of Shopian district in South Kashmir. Administration officials have urged people residing near rivers and streams to stay vigilant and reach out to emergency control rooms in case of any crisis. Unfavourable weather conditions are expected to persist over the coming days.
